What's Hospice Care?

Hospice is specialized care for people on their journey with a life-limiting illness. This end-of-life care focuses on managing symptoms such as pain, nausea, and anxiety. Hospice care also provides emotional and spiritual support to the patient and family during this journey and after your loved ones passing.


Where Does Hospice Care Take Place?

Hospice care can take place in:

  • The comfort of your own home within a 35-mile radius of Norfolk
  • An inpatient hospital care setting for symptom management or respite care
  • A skilled nursing home or assisted living facility

Your Hospice Care Team

Work with the skilled and experienced hospice care team to stay comfortable. Depending on your needs and preferences, your team may include:

Hospice Physician

Coordinates and provides medical care

Hospice Medical Director

Additional oversight and coverage for medical care

Nurses

Coordinate with your physician to provide pain and symptom management, emotional support, and patient and family education.

Social Worker

Provides counseling and connects you with community resources and bereavement services

Home Health Aides

Home health aides offer one-on-one personal care and companionship

Give spiritual support and guidance

The goal of hospice care is to improve the quality of life by providing comfort and respecting your dignity. Depending on your needs and wishes, you may receive:

  • Medication management

Ask your care team about documenting your wishes for medical treatment. Advance care planning ensures they’re honored if you become unable to communicate them.

Insurance Coverage for Hospice Care

Medicare covers the full cost of hospice care. Most private insurance plans have a hospice benefit to cover hospice care. Rely on us or ask your insurance provider to help you understand your coverage and benefits.
