Physicians Honored at Faith Regional’s 2018 Medical Staff Awards Banquet

James Hildreth Dunlap, MD and Brent Premer, MDNorfolk – February 2, 2018: Two Norfolk physicians were honored at the 2018 Faith Regional Medical Staff Awards Banquet held on February 1. James Hildreth Dunlap, MD, was recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award and Brent Premer, MD, was named the 2017 Physician of the Year.

James Hildreth Dunlap, MD, was recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Dunlap was born and raised in Lincoln, NE. He enlisted in the Navy in December 1943 and was assigned to the Navy V12 program at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, KS. 1945, he transferred to the V12 program at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL where he completed his pre-medical training. After he was dismissed from the Navy, he attended the University of Nebraska Medical School in Omaha, graduating in 1950. He married Ara Jane Hill during his sophomore year.

Following graduation, Dr. Dunlap completed his medical internship at Indianapolis General Hospital in Indianapolis. He then re-enlisted in the Navy. Anticipating a delay in his enlistment, Dr. Dunlap accepted a two-month, fill-in position in Norfolk with Drs. C.J. and Val Verges. During this time in Norfolk, the first of the Dunlap’s five children was born.

Enlistment papers were finalized in September 1952. Dr. Dunlap was assigned to the U.S. Navy Hospital and U.S. Marine Air Station in Quantico, VA. Following completion of his Navy enlistment in September 1954, the Dunlaps returned to Norfolk and Dr. Dunlap joined the practice of Dr. S.H. Brauer.

Dr. Dunlap’s medical practice primary included the general care of patients but he also performed surgeries and delivered nearly 3,000 babies in his 40-year practice. He retired in 1990. 

Dr. Dunlap was an active member of several different boards and associations. He was a member and president of Northeast Nebraska Medical Association, Lutheran Community Hospital, Our Lady of Lourdes, and more. Dr. Dunlap was also instrumental in rewriting Nebraska Malpractice Legislation.

In 2003, he received the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Medicine Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni Award for Outstanding Services.

Dr. Dunlap was an outdoor enthusiast and a mechanical genius. In 1967, the Dunlap’s purchased a farm on which they turned in to the Dunlap’s Christmas Tree Plantation that continued operation until 2002.

Brent Premer, MD, was named Faith Regional’s 2017 Physician of the Year.  Dr. Premer, an anesthesiologist, has served on Faith Regional’s medical staff since March 2006. A couple of comments about Dr. Premer submitted on the nomination forms, include:

“I think one word to describe him would be generous.  He is the amazing type of physician that stands out in the group. He treats every patient as if they were his family member. Every day he is selfless, kind and committed to providing the best care at Faith Regional.”

“He is dedicated to the patients at FRHS as well as the staff he works with. He is very personable and professional when caring for his patents. He remains calm in difficult situations and can be relied upon to address any situation in a timely manner. I am proud to work with him.”

Nearly 160 submissions were received nominating 32 physicians for the 2017 Physician of the Year. Nominations were accepted through November 1, 2017. The winner was chosen by Faith Regional’s Physician of the Year Selection Committee.  Nominees were evaluated on the testimonials received, active involvement in the hospital and within the community, and had to be a member of Faith Regional’s medical staff.  Nominations for the 2018 Physician of the Year can be submitted online now through November 1, 2018.  Click here to submit a nomination.
